Hey, rock fans! If you've ever found yourself defending or bashing Nickelback, you're not alone. In a recent chat on That Fuzzing Rock Show, Eric "AK" Knutson from the Arizona metal legends Flotsam and Jetsam shared his thoughts on whether Nickelback really gets an undeserved bad rap.
According to Knutson, it's a mixed bag. He admits he's not privy to the full backstory behind the Nickelback hate, but he points out that the band shifted from their initial heavy sound to something more commercially viable - a smart move financially. However, the real kicker seems to be Chad Kroeger's reputation. Knutson suggests that Kroeger's less-than-charming personality might be at the heart of why musicians, in particular, have such strong feelings against him.
Despite the personal gripes, Knutson acknowledges that Nickelback's music is "brilliantly written," evidenced by their ability to fill arenas year after year. This success, he implies, might be what stings for some musicians who've had less commercial success or negative interactions with Kroeger.
Knutson's take is that the disdain for Nickelback among musicians might have morphed into a sort of cultural phenomenon where hating on the band became almost a rite of passage for those in the music community.
