SAGA’s Michael Sadler Shares Heartfelt Update on Incurable Cancer Diagnosis
Toronto, Canada – Michael Sadler, the 71-year-old vocalist of Canadian progressive rock legends SAGA, has revealed that his aggressive form of cancer, diagnosed last year, is “incurable and untreatable.” In a poignant social media post, Sadler shared that he recently lost his sister to cancer and that his brother is also battling the disease.
In his statement, Sadler reflected on his journey: “In April, just before boarding a cruise, I learned my cancer is incurable and untreatable. Though I’m currently stable and doing well, this news has shifted my focus to living more purposefully. In this autumn of my life, I’m reflecting on the time I’ve wasted and cherishing the moments I have left—deciding what to do, with whom, and how to spend it.”
Sadler, who celebrated his birthday on July 5, 2025, emphasized his commitment to his musical legacy and family. “I’m working on new projects for SAGA, completing my promises to my family, and living in this uncertain space with gratitude for every moment,” he wrote. He also expressed deep appreciation for fans’ support, adding, “Your birthday wishes and sympathy have touched my heart. Your love means the world to me and my family.”
Last September, Sadler’s wife, Gwen, first shared that he was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of muscle-invasive cancer, which affects only 3-5% of cases. Despite his diagnosis, Sadler remains hopeful about connecting with fans at future events, saying, “I hope to see you all again—maybe we’ll take a few more selfies.”
SAGA, known for nearly two dozen albums, including their latest, Symmetry (March 2021, earMUSIC), continues to be a cornerstone of progressive rock. Fans can follow Sadler’s journey and upcoming events via the band’s official channels.
